Fashion Forecasting: Belk Fall 2012

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending Belk's Fall 2012 Fashion Preview with a group of fashion journalists and bloggers. I don't know about you, but when it comes to fashion, fall is definitely my favorite of the four seasons! There's something about a great boot, comfy sweaters and smart-fitting jackets that makes me absolutely giddy!

The presentation was led by the always impeccably dressed Arlene Goldstein, V.P. of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction for the department store.

According to Goldstein, fall 2012 fashion is all about a Polished look: grand gestures, bold statements, the right handbag, and last but definitely not least, COLOR! Here are four (4) looks you should be checking out for fall:

1. My Fair Lady

An homage to decades gone by, the "My Fair Lady" look is straight from the pages of "The Great Gatsby." Deco blocking, cloche hats and lace! You'll be sure to see the peter pan collar in jewelry, tops and coats.

2. Vivid

Look for dresses and tops with blocking, banding, prints and patterns with color. Fall is all about pulling together color in a way that feels very sleek and smart. But what do you do if your afraid of color? Begin with accessories. Pair bright hues with gold jewelry or animal printed shoes/belts as neutrals or try pumps in bold colors with hardware. If you're a fashion risk-taker who loves pattern mixing, be sure to use one color in common.

3. Town + Country &
4. Mod Modern

Town + Country is about brass finished jewelry, tweed, lots of textures and hand knits. Snakeskin print will be one of the most important detail of the season. Also, looks for leather trims, skinny pants or leggings pared with the versatility of a crisp white top!

Mod Modern (my favorite!) is a tribute to retrospect. A-line shapes, houndstooth patterns and ankle boots! Again, you will see banding, blocking, and pieces with a geometric feel. Lots of shifts and sheath dresses. Art deco touches with black and silver used together. Plus, the statement necklace will continue as a popular trend with the metal collar necklace as the must-have piece for this look.

Lastly, if you're closet editing for fall and wondering what you should keep or purchase, here are 11 most-wanted looks for the season:

1. Bold color
2. Fitted Blazer
3. Ankle pant
4. Pencil skirt
5. Glitzy top
6. Shift dresses
7. New shape sweater (think oversize or boxy)
8. Metal Collar
9. Fashion Watch (rose gold, mixed metals, delicate bands return)
10. Cross-body handbag:
11. Boots + Booties
