Blue in Green

I'm really digging this color scheme for spring. The softness of the pastel mint green paired against the sharp contrast of a bold, electric blue. Mix in a little paisley and you've got the perfect Saturday afternoon date ensemble.

Did you catch the title of the post? I named it after one of my favorite Miles Davis songs. Listen here and prepare to be taken to lazy land.

How to Style: Mara Hoffman Printed Column Dress

Credits: Mara Hoffman Dress, $222 | Fringe Earrings, Forever 21 (similar) | Target Crossbody Bag, $22 | Forever 21 Faux Suede Booties, $35

I purchased this fun (and funky) Mara Hoffman column dress back in January during a big winter sale at the Les Nouvelles showroom (for MUCH less than what The Outnet is listing it for). When I saw it hanging on the rack with its plunging neckline, I didn't think it would flatter my body type (hello, Hollywood Tape!). But after trying it on, I knew I would not be leaving the showroom without it!

To style the dress I decided to keep within the tribal theme -- a pair of fringe earrings, suede booties and a crossbody (for hands free ease) rounds out the look perfectly. I've been waiting for just the right occasion to whip it out, and what better occasion is there than Thursday night's Solange concert here in Atlanta, right?

Rest assured I'll be getting my stylish two step on.

Fun with NARS

My obsession with makeup and the beauty industry is probably the only thing that trumps my love of fashion. So naturally, when I heard about the NARS Mega Event at my local (and favorite) Nordstrom location, I made an appointment ASAP.

My weekly makeup routine is pretty simple: mascara, lipgloss, a little blush and I'm out the door. But after playing in some of the brands upcoming spring 2013 eye and cheek colors, I think I'm going to take my M-F look up a notch!

My sister, talking through and overcoming her fear of blush with NARS MUA Karon

Me, with all my goodies!

Here is a list of product I picked up at the event:

A special thanks to our makeup artists, Sara and Karon for NARS at Nordstrom Phipps Plaza, for making us look so glamorous!

While naturally I'm not a tardy person, today I stuck around the house for a few more minutes before jetting off to the office to catch this great trends segment on The Today Show. And boy am I happy I did! The motto here at Brains of the Outfit is #shopsmart, so how excited were we to spot Lucky Magazine Style Editor, Lori Bergamotto, on the morning show sharing her great tips on how to avoid falling for tricks of the retail trade when it comes to shopping sales. Spring 2013 Trend: Black & White Contrast

Fashion minimalists rejoice! The black and white contrast trend is reported to be huge for spring 2013, which is a good thing for most, seeing as how EVERYONE has at least one go-to black and white printed top, stripped dress or something in their closets, right?

And to add another element to the style, we immediately thought of the soul singing, tuxedo-wearing, Cover Girl modeling star, Janelle Monae, (natch) and her uber-cool use of black and white menswear.

And even if you're not ready to take on head-to-toe black and white menswear, mixing elements like a heeled oxford or a tuxedo pant here and there is a great way to incorporate the look into your spring wardrobe.

As for that polka dot bowtie? Yeah, it's on my list.

The color green in any shade or variation immediately catches my attention. And the delicate hue of mint can feminize any look. No wonder it's forecasted to be a big hit for spring 2013.

Plus Size Done Right: Eloquii.com

(Image via)

I am pleasantly surprised at the number of quality plus size clothing options that are now available. In the past, there were only a handful of retailers who catered to full-figured shoppers, and the selections weren't always that great. When I was a size 14+, all that seemed to be available were overly blousy polyester tops and slacks with too much material in certain areas. Awful. Just...awful.

Recently a friend introduced me to a new line of affordable plus-size clothes that literally made my heart sing! Eloquii.com, a subsidiary of The Limited, is chock-full of yummy dresses, tops, jackets, accessories and everything else a stylish woman needs. The site also has a cool "Shape My Style" tool to help you find the best pieces for your body type. And to top it all off, they include a cute little "why we started this company" statement on the Website:

Amen, sister.

Here, a few of my picks from Eloquii.com.

Printed Shirtdress | $119

Angel Sleeve Tunic Top | $65
Printed Pencil Skirt | $65

Studded Collar Sleeveless Tuxedo Top | $33

Love, love love! What do you think of my Eloquii picks? Have you shopped with the brand before? If so, share with us your experience by leaving a comment below!

Making a Point

I'm a heel lover at heart, but admittedly, round-toe flats have started to overrun my shoe closet. They're so darn comfortable and easy to throw on!

But during my outings this past weekend, I happened to pick up two new pairs of pointy-toe pumps that are taking it back to my stiletto roots.

The "Nolita" pump from the Prabal Gurung for Target Collection is a great price at only $39. You can pair it with jeans, an LBD, or with a bold-colored pencil skirt, like I did above. Thanks to The Mr. for picking up the tab on these!

And I couldn't pass up this pair of cranberry colored suede pumps on the sales table at Banana Republic (on sale in-store with an additional 35% off!). I happened to wear them Saturday night with my Forever 21 faux leather pants, but they're just as stylish with your favorite skinny jeans or, for the more adventurous, cute pair of sequin shorts!

Which pump style do you prefer: pointy-toe or round? Leave a comment for me below!

Blogger Jewelry Event at Judith Bright

Silk Cargo Pocket Blouse, BCBGMAXAZRIA | Heavy Link Lasso Necklace ($263) | "Genevieve" RockDrop Earrings ($133) | RockStar Nest Ring ($238)
Saturday I had the pleasure of attending a blogger event at Judith Bright, an amazing jewelry boutique nestled in the heart of uber-stylish Virginia Highland. The designer, of the same name, hand makes each bauble of her Silver+Rocks and Silver+Gold lines, which are created from sterling silver and 14K gold-filled chains and topped with gorgeous semi-precious stones. Her designs have adorned the arms, ears and necks of Hollywood A-listers such as Jennifer LopezBlake Lively and Meryl Streep, and has been featured in O Magazine, People and The Wall Street Journal.

Pieces start at just $35, making the line affordable for most budgets (SCORE!). I fell for the super-thin, gold hammered hoops and Judith's line of zen-inspiring sandalwood bracelets. But see below for more must-haves from the collections:

Love, right? Judith Bright has locations in Nashville, L.A., and Atlanta. For more information and to shop online, visit JudithBright.com.

Is it Spring Yet?

I've had just about enough of these recent rainy, cold days. So much so that I've added at least five Caribbean vacations to my shopping cart on Jetsetter.com. Not to mention, winter weather puts me in nesting mode--big time. It's been weeks days since I last stepped foot inside the gym...which makes for a grumpy, carb-craving EWB.

And while my current disposition could use some sunnier skies, I'm getting my springtime fix by spying fun, airy skirts and tanks with bright and cheery accessories until the weather breaks. Like these:

Email Bag: 1 Lace Dress, 2 Ways

I love getting emails and Facebook messages from BOTO readers! So how excited was I to get an email from Ericka J. in Savannah, GA about a recent fashion find. She writes:First, thanks for your email, Ericka! Second, kudos on your new lace dress. It's definitely on-trend for the season and there are a number of ways to wear it. Here is how I paired 1 dress, 2 ways:

The Workweek
Dressing for the office doesn't mean you have to appear dowdy. A simple lace sheath is awesome in a bright pop of color.  Streamline your office-appropriate look with a great pair of nude booties, a skinny belt, and simple accessories like a delicate chain necklace and a suede bucket bag. Add a little city-girl edge to your ensemble with a fur-lined parka and you're good to go!

The Weekend

The great thing about a trendy dress is that you can mix and match it for a variety of different settings and occasions. For instance, weekends are made for catching up with girlfriends, visiting your favorite local coffee shop or even shopping til' you drop! For your weekend look, opt for a pair of fun flats like sparkly oxfords. Throw on a buttoned cardigan in a neutral color and cinch the waist with your skinny belt to create a curvy silhouette. Voila!

Ericka, I hope this helps! Be sure to send pics of how you put your ensembles together! And if you have a wardrobe conundrum, email me at brainsoftheoutfit@gmail.com!

Fashion Selfies. . .

Suede Platforms, BCBGeneration (old, simliar here) | Shirtdress, Banana Republic (similar, here) | Wool Cardigan, Cynthia Rowley (similar, here) | Multi-strand Necklace, Forever21 (similar, here)

Let's be clear. I don't have a photographer following my every move like a lot of these fab fashion bloggers. And that's OK with me (for now). But, I do love taking these "A View From the Top" selfies, because sometimes it's just much more interesting to see an ensemble from a different angle.

I wore this to the office a few weeks ago and stumbled upon a photo of it in my camera roll the other day. I like how one can see only my shoes, cardi, a bit of the shirtdress hemline and a chunky, multi-strand necklace. Honestly, I was proud of how I pulled all these elements together. I don't think I paid more than $150 for the entire look and felt really confident with the pairings--especially considering how I changed clothes a million times that morning before walking out the door. Ah, such is life.

However, fashion is all about each individual's perspective, and I'm posting this photo for you to see me...possibly in a different way than I saw myself that day.

Your thoughts?

Prabal Gurung for Target: What I Want

I was a tad bit shocked and disappointed when the Neiman Marcus for Target Holiday Collection went bust before St. Nick could shimmy down my parent's chimney. I stood in line the day it launched and shelled out retail price for a good number of items, only to find that mere weeks later they would be slashed to clearance-priced shells of their former selves.

Learn from my mistakes, kids.

But this Sunday, February 10th, I will not make the same mistake twice when Prabal Gurung's collection waltzes by the bullseye. Although I will stand in line, yet again, to peek at the 80+ pieces of fashion goodness, I will hold out like a high school girl before pressing the button and ejecting my debit card.

However, that doesn't mean I don't have my eye on a couple of choice items.

Let's hope I can use a bit of restraint come Sunday.

Beyonce's Rubin Singer Super Bowl Costume

While the Louisiana/Mercedes Benz Superdome gets their power situation together, I figured this was a good time to recap that amazing Super Bowl performance with the one and only Beyonce.

I laughed. I cried. I marveled at Kelly Rowland's toned legs.

Now back to the fashion. After a few Google searches, we've learned that her costume was created by designer Rubin Singer, from his F/W 2013 collection. The leather/lace/liquid nylon ensemble was a great choice for arguably one of the biggest performances of her career. If you missed it, here's a peek:

A Valentine's Day Gift Guide

Happy Friday and the first day of February! The month of amore has officially begun, and you now have 13 days to find gifts for those special people on your list!

I took the liberty of putting together an easy gift guide of four items that fit those often difficult-to-please personalities: the foodie, the fashion enthusiast, the hipster and the diva. (Trust me, everyone has at least one of these people in their lives.)

(1) The Foodie: French Macarons. Light. Yummy. Delicious. PERFECT.

(2) The Fashion Enthusiast: This gorgeous coffee table book offers a look into the world of Vogue fashion editors, and photographers, whose contributions helped create what we refer to as, "The Fashion Bible."

(3) The Hipster: The monocle. Probably the most hipster thing your hipster is missing.

(4) The Diva: A Swarovski crystal pop phone. For conversations too fabulous for earbuds.
