{WEEKEND PLANS} STRAWBERRIES + CHAMPAGNE

http://ministryofalcohol.com/2012/champagne-soaked-4th-of-july-strawberries/

Let's focus on this glorious picture for a second folks: champagne. soaked. strawberries.

While my weekend consists of hosting my parents, a rooftop wedding AND a dirty 30 birthday celebration, I vow to carve out a few moments to try out this refreshing cocktail (courtesy of the blog, Ministry of Alcohol...love that name) and get a little boozy with my mama and sister. It's what we do best!

What are your plans this weekend?

STYLE SIREN: MY 5 FAVE FASHION MOMENTS BY SOLANGE

http://www.elle.co.za/solange-knowles-2/

Join me in wishing a very happy birthday to one my favorite style sirens, Solange! It's not secret that I am a big fan of the Knowles girls, hunty. And I definitely feel a kindred spirit with the funky/boho, "I do my own thing because I'm a cool little sister," vibe Solange gives off. And we hear that she's possibly engaged to long-time beau Alan Ferguson. Who can't wait to see what THAT wedding will look like?! Although her recent media mentions have been mired on controversy, she's yet to stop that from putting her best fab look forward. So here, I count down five of my favorite five looks rocked by SPK over the years:

(1.) Sporting bold stripes and a little cleavage action at the premier of Great Gatsby.

Madewell campaign

(2.) Her signature look of mixing print and pattern mixing for the
Solange X Madwell Fall 2012 ad campaign.

(3.) Giving us lots of 70s sexy at Elle Magazine's Women in Music Event in 2011

(4.) Wearing canary yellow at a Rimmel London party to celebrate her success as a brand spokesmodel.

(5.) Perfect paired down in hot pink and long box braids.

There are so many great photos of her on the Web that it was really hard to only pick five. I mean, I could do a series on this chick as a style siren (not a bad idea, actually). Which are your favorite Solange fashion moments? Leave a comment below!

{SOMEWHAT} YUMMY MONDAY: CITRUS HERB ROASTED CHICKEN

Disclaimer: I don't cook chicken very often. Especially dark meat chicken. But I was really intrigued by this recipe for Citrus Herb Roasted Chicken I found on Pinterest a few weeks back, so I gave it a try. And a #CulinaryFail ensued.

I have a love/hate relationship with yardbird. My mom baked chicken at least 2x a week, so for a long time, I felt I'd had my fill of it. I mean, I could've grown feathers by the time I hit puberty. (Plus, I fancy myself a beef lover.) But in trying to stick to a  better diet and healthier lifesyle, I decided to throw caution to the wind and handle raw poultry. Scary, I know.

I would like to say that my dish turned out INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS...as I followed the directions to the letter and seasoned these leg quarters with almost every spice known to man (fresh rosemary, thyme, paprika, chopped garlic, green onions, parsley, red and black pepper, and lemon/lime/orange slices).

But I forgot one darn thing: sea salt. I know....I know. How could one forget to cook with salt? But I didn't so much as forget to cook with it as I just didn't use enough. I can be really heavy handed with salt, so I've learned to use it sparingly in dishes. "Season To Taste" is a measurement I never quite mastered. But, the one thing I could most definitely taste was lime. Lots of lime. (Cook's note to self: use way less lime slices next time. WAY LESS.)

I will say, though, the aroma filled our home with a scent worthy of something that Ina Garten would whip up on an episode of Barefoot Contessa, but the flavor fell flat because of just one ingredient. And I hate adding salt to dishes after they're plated, so I just plowed through those leg quarters as best I could. And I'm eating for lunch today as well.

Luckily I didn't slave over this meal very long, and my husband is such a good sport that he ate it anyway. Next time, I'll be sure to salt that sucker til my blood pressure gives me much attitude.

And not for nothing, at least it looks pretty in the picture :)

STYLE FILE: BRANDING ELEMENTS FOR YOUR WEB PRESENCE

Running this blog for the past couple years has been an enjoyable, but sometimes challenging, experience. Especially in the "branding" department. I started Brains of the Outfit as a place to share my "style for less" tips and my bargain shopping finds. But within the past few months, I've started to take a huge interest in health and fitness and cooking. So I've been wrestling with the idea of re-branding my site. But here is where things get tricky.

Do you know how many "lifestyle" blogs there are on the Web? Millions. Literally, millions. So how do I get my site to stand out from the rest? Ultimately, it all comes down to the visual elements imparted in the blog's presence. Typography, color, texture, themes...these are all design terms that basically answer the question, "who are you and what is your blog about?" at first glance.

I've been doing a bit of research and fooled around with some design elements and this is my first attempt at rebranding:

And don't worry, I'm not changing my name. I just like alliterations and the way the "C" looks all fancy and dolled up.

Are you in the process of starting a blog, website, or looking to refresh and rebrand what you currently have? Let's chat about it below!

{Credit: Dress + Shoes, Zara}

I feel like Little Suzie Homemaker in this cute retro dress from Zara. Like I should be making cookies for the kiddies or waiting to bring the Mr. his pipe and slippers. The print and mint (sorry for the rhyme) immediately caught my eye, and even though you don't see it in these photos, there is a peek-a-boo back with a sexy slit.

And of course, nothing says, "Domestic Goddess" more than a pair of nude, lace-up python pumps.
